Larry Chu, MD, MS
Dr. Larry Chu, is a visionary leader and pioneering force in the field of anesthesiology. He has been a long-standing member of the Stanford University Department of Anesthesiology. As a Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University and the Director of the Stanford Anesthesia Informatics and Media (AIM) Lab, Dr. Chu has made significant contributions to advancing education, research, and patient care.
Through his innovative initiatives, such as the START online educational program, the Learnly online learning ecosystem, Medicine X, and the Stanford Anesthesia Summer Institutes, Dr. Chu has transformed the landscape of anesthesiology education. His passion for harnessing the power of technology, including artificial intelligence and large language models, has positioned him at the forefront of research aimed at incorporating LLMs into academic anesthesiology.
His prior research includes 15 years of continuous NIH funding with multiple K-awards, an RO1 award, and he currently has active projects with the World Health Organization and PCORI.
Dr. Chu’s impact extends beyond his groundbreaking research, as evidenced by his prolific contributions to academic literature. As the founding co-editor-in-chief of the award-winning textbook “Manual of Clinical Anesthesiology” and the author of numerous books, peer-reviewed articles, and book chapters. Dr. Chu served on the editorial advisory board of the BMJ for eight years. He has shaped the knowledge and practices of physicians worldwide.
Recognized as a national leader by his peers, Dr. Chu’s exceptional achievements have earned him the IARS Innovation in Education Award, and membership in the prestigious Association of University Anesthesiologists. His expertise and guidance have been sought by the highest levels of government, including an invitation from President Obama to co-produce a pivotal White House workshop on patient partnerships in medical research.
